Spurring Social Innovation Around the World

By Colleen Hammelman, ICP Program Associate, and
Jos Truitt
, ICP Summer of Service Fellow

Social Innovation: the process of inventing, securing support for, and implementing novel solutions to social needs and problems. (Stanford Social Innovation Review, 2003)[1]

Social Innovation In Global Youth Service

By Veronika Schlecht, ICP Program Assistant

While there is a need for greater investment in supporting innovative service programs, there are inspiring examples around the world of programs that contribute to stimulating youth civic engagement and address critical issues such as HIV/AIDS and climate change. All the initiatives described below follow an approach that benefits the individual and the entire community.

Five Years of the NYS: Looking Back, Looking Forward

By Mathe P. Mphale, National Youth Service Unit, National Development Agency,
South Africa

In a country with an army of young people who were, and still are out of school, unemployed, and unskilled, the South African government's launch of the National Youth Service Programme (NYS) in Cape Town five years ago on August 24 represented a significant milestone in the youth development sector long yearned for, and rallied all sectors of the society to recognize the capacity that exists within the South African young people to take forward the constitutional objectives of healing the ills of apartheid and playing a leadership role in the delivery of the reconstruction and development agenda.
