4C Climate Change Conservation Corps, Earth Works Institute
The 4C
Climate Change Conservation Corps New
Mexico youth corps pilot project was
launched
in late 2008 to respond to a growing need
to both address climate change and economic
issues, through the creation of new jobs and
the provision of job training for a new green
economy. The 4C youth corps employs and trains
young adults ages 17-27 in five green career
pathways that focus on mitigating the effects
and reversing the causes of climate change.
Those five pathways are:
1. Natural Resource Health
2. Green Planning, Architecture and Building
3. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Systems
4. Organic Food Production and Local Food Security
5. Education and Community Mobilization
As reported by the Public News Service, a crew of young adults spent the summer months of 2009 getting low-and moderate-income households in Santa Fe ready for winter by doing simple, free weatherization and energy efficiency upgrades for the households most likely to struggle with paying their energy bill. The goal of 4C is to provide quality jobs and higher education to local youth of all backgrounds. Members will provide skilled labor and community leadership while undertaking vocational training or pursuing college degrees for careers that directly or indirectly address climate change.
According to Daniel Werwath, from the Santa-Fe based Housing Trust, with which 4C partners, “says it’s a win-win-win that starts with fighting climate change and helping home ownership remain affordable in the long run. ‘ We are simultaneously dealing with the issues of marginalized youth populations and helping them access career tracks.’”
