ICP Prepares for Stakeholder Consultation in India

Young people between 15 and 35 years of age represent 33% of India's population and are key to the successful development of all aspects of Indian society. In order to increase and improve opportunities for young Indians to contribute to the development of their communities, ICP is undertaking a multi-year project to address the challenges and opportunities for investing in young people as social change agents in India. As a key feature setting the foundation for this multi-year project, ICP is collaborating with India-based NGO, Pravah, to hold a small stakeholder consultation in New Delhi, India, on March 3-4, 2009. President Urges Congress to Pass National Service Legislation
USA - In a speech tonight to a joint session of Congress, President Obama called on lawmakers to pass a bill that would greatly increase participation in national-service programs.

Mr. Obama urged members of the House and Senate to pass the Serve America Act, which has been introduced by Sens. Orrin Hatch, Republican of Utah, and Edward Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts. Read More>>
 
 
 

Dodd, DeLauro Push Community Service Bills
USA - Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Rosa DeLauro introduced a package of bills Tuesday in response to President Barack Obama's call for a new national focus on community service. The two Connecticut lawmakers, who often work closely with nonprofits and service groups, announced four bills that open up national service opportunities to a wide range of age groups — from children to people who are at or near retirement age. ICP is excited that one of the four bills introduced by Senators Dodd and DeLauro would create funding for "Summer of Service" programs. Read more about ICP's Summer of Service initiative.

ICP Welcomes Spring 2009 Interns!
ICP is pleased to welcome spring interns Sarah Tucker and Ben Krumholz to ICP.
 
Sarah is a sophomore at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, studying International Politics with a certificate in Justice and Peace Studies.  Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sarah first got into the youth service field through working with PeaceJam, an international organization which works with Nobel Peace Prize winners to promote youth service-learning.

Ben is a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, and will graduate this Spring with a bachelors degree in American Studies.After graduation in May 2009, Ben plans to pursue his passion for youth-oriented community and national service.

 

Youth Delegates at the UN Climate Conference in Poznan

The 14th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change along with the 4th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol was held in Poznan, Poland from 1-12 December 2008.

Young people from all over the world gathered in Poznan to show their deep concern about climate change and its devastating global impacts. They raised their voices to demand commitment from political leaders to push forward concrete measures to reduce carbon emissions, to increase investments in new technologies, and to support developing countries in their struggle to adapt to changes to their economic and social systems caused by climate change. Giving South Pacific Youth a Voice
In this World Bank report, young people throughout six Pacific nations were surveyed to gain an understanding of the changes they themselves wanted to see in their communities in order to make some practical recommendations to help implement these changes. Young Pacific Islanders are looking for a way to make a contribution to their community and have their voices heard. The efforts, views and opinions of government agencies, youth sector organizations, and youth themselves need to be united in order to create a much-needed change. Read More>>

The Generator, Winter 2009
Meaningful service is at the heart of quality service-learning. As one of the eight K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice, it is critical to the initial stage of assessing community needs. While it is central to the entire experience, it can also play a critical role in a secondary service-learning experience -- at the "now what?" stage. Students who've been through an initial experience are then poised to go deeper in their next experience, building off the experiences of the first, and addressing root causes of an issue. In this winter issue of the Generator, we examine the research supporting meaningful service, its role in the service-learning cycle, and its application in a Maine middle school gardening project.
