President-Elect Obama and the Call to
Service
By Molly Brunkow, Master of Public Service Candidate from the University of Alabama-Little Rock Clinton School of Public Service and Capstone Intern for ICP “This will not be a call issued in one speech or one program - this will be a central cause of my presidency. We will ask Americans to serve. We will create new opportunities for Americans to serve. And we will direct that service to our most pressing national challenges.”- U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama during a speech given at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs July 2, 2008. When Barack Obama is sworn in as president of the United States of America on January 20th, he will be bringing with him a unique legacy of public service. This is evident in the words of his website: “For Barack Obama service has not been just the slogan of a campaign; it has been the cause of his life.” Read More>> |

Youth @ Annual Meeting at the World Bank By Natalya Twohill, ICP Intern This year, for the first time ever, the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings included a special three-day session devoted to youth. From October 8–10, 18 young leaders from around the world, including ICP intern Natalya Twohill, gathered in Washington to discuss their projects, goals, and development concerns. While many of the sessions were gruelingly long and intense, participants stayed enthusiastic and engaged throughout. The session encouraged the sharing of many great ideas and initiatives and resulted in an action plan for how youth can become bigger players in development. Read More>> |

Countdown to the IANYS
8th Global Conference: November 18-22 By Elizabeth Brouwer, ICP Intern
The IANYS 8th Global Conference on National Youth Service looks like it will be the most exciting and extensive IANYS conference to date! Not only will established national youth service programs from around the world be represented, but policy makers, researchers, government officials and NGOs interested in engaging youth in their communities will be present to share ideas and learn from their colleagues. We are expecting over 150 participants to join us at the Fondation des Etats-Unis at the Cité Universaire in Paris, France. Because the conference is based in Europe, there will be significant representation from European countries. However, we also have participants coming from all regions of the world, and countries including China, Vietnam, Brunei, India, Egypt, Israel, Kuwait, Sudan, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Brazil, Jamaica, the USA, and more. There are government officials attending, including Deputy Ministers and Directors of National Youth Service, as well as NGO and university representatives. Kumi Naidoo, Secretary-General of CIVICUS, and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia will give keynote addresses. Read More>> |
