ICP Participates in the ServiceNation Summit

As a member of the Organizing Committee for ServiceNation, ICP participated in the ServiceNation Summit in New York City, September 11-12, 2008. Over 500 leaders from NGO, universities, foundations, businesses, and government gathered to celebrate the potential of citizen service and to put forth a policy agenda for the next presidential administration on expanding volunteer opportunities for all Americans as a means for addressing social challenges. Susan Stroud, ICP Executive Director, attended the Summit while Jean Manney, ICP Program Associate, got a behind-the-scenes experience as a volunteer for the event. Read More>>

Global Youth Experts Convene in Istanbul
Turkey - The International Youth Foundation convened top leaders of youth-serving organizations, global companies and governmental organizations from around the world to discuss global trends and the latest advancements in youth development within the broader context of a rapidly changing world.  Read More>>

 


 

Youth Bill Tabled in Namibian Parliament
Namibia - Namibian Youth, National Service Sport and Culture Minister Willem Konjore has tabled the much-awaited National Youth Council Bill in Parliament. The Bill, once enacted, will see the creation of a national youth development agency, and contribute towards the establishment of a professional youth development sector. Read More>>

 


 

Kennedy and Hatch Introduce New Serve America Act
USA- Senators Edward Kennedy and Orrin Hatch introduced a major new national service bill aimed at recruiting 175,000 Americans to tackle national problems such as health care, education, energy, and the environment. Read More>>

South Africa: Project to Improve Communities, Skill Youth
South Africa - The Masupatsela Youth Pioneer Programme, which will see youth actively trying to improve their communities and the lives of the people around them while learning skills, is to be launched next month. The youth programme aims to develop the youth into "agents of change" by giving them the tools to conduct community service. Read More>>

 


 

Supporting Capacity-Building for Youth Participation in Decision-Making
Op-Ed by Anu Pekkonen, CIVICUS Participatory Governance Programme Coordinator - It is vital that opportunities are created to foster greater youth participation in political processes. Young people in the global North and South alike express a sense of alienation from the political system, manifested in low voter turnouts among youth and ageing membership of political parties. ICP is now accepting applications for the Spring 2009 Research & Communications Internship. Interns are an integral part of the ICP team and have the opportunity to perform sustantive work on ICP projects while working in the non-profit heart of Washington, D.C.
 
 
 

 
 
ICP Welcomes Molly Brunkow!
ICP is pleased to announce the arrival of Molly Brunkow. Molly Brunkow is coming to ICP from the Clinton School of Public Service at the University of Arkansas, where she is studying for her master’s degree.  Molly is an AmeriCorps alumni and an avid world traveler who will be working on her capstone project with ICP.

  ICP Interns Participate in Voices for National Service Hill Day

On September 24-25, 2008, advocates for national service from around the country convened on Washington, D.C.'s Capitol Hill for the opportunity to educate and influence Congress about the need to expand opportunities for Americans to serve their country. Two of ICP's Fall 2008 interns, Elizabeth Brouwer and Natalya Twohill, were fortunate enough to participate in this event. Read More>>

Featured Program: Summer Peace Camps

The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement (SMWIPM) launched its pilot, "Summer Peace Camps," July 26th to July 31st, 2008. The Summer Peace Camps (SPC) are an interactive, week-long set of programs convened to empower Egyptian youth in seeing school as a space for active knowledge seeking and for creating particapatory learning environments. IANYS is excited to announce that Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia and Africa's first elected female head of state, will be speaking at the 8th Global Conference via a pre-recorded video message.

ICP is also pleased to announce that Kumi Naidoo, the Secretary General of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, is a confirmed keynote speaker for the 8th Global Conference on National Youth Service.

The Talloires Network

2008 Civic Health Index Poll
The Center for (CIRCLE) designed and analyzed the 2008 Civic Health Index Poll for the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC), with input from the NCoC and its Civic Indicators Working Group. The survey provides a wealth of information about Americans’ civic participation. Citizens are heavily engaged in political activities during the 2008 campaign, but many do not anticipate taking action on issues raised during the campaign after the election is over. The survey did, however, find that Americans favor policy change to institutionalize civic engagement, supporting financing students' tuition in return for service and expanding service learning programs. Service-Learning Policies and Practices: A Research-Based Advocacy Paper
This paper builds upon existing NCLC work, and provides a research-based service-learning framework encompassing the simultaneous renewal of five critical components shown to institutionalize and maximize service-learning effectiveness: vision and leadership, curriculum and assessment, community-school partnerships, professional development and continuous improvement. This paper translates service-learning's research-based evidence for education leaders and identifies best practices and policies. Read More>>
