2008
Civic Health Index Poll
The Center for (CIRCLE) designed and
analyzed the 2008 Civic Health Index Poll for
the
National Conference on Citizenship
(NCoC), with input from the NCoC and
its Civic Indicators Working Group. The
survey provides a wealth of
information about Americans’ civic
participation. Citizens are heavily
engaged in political activities during
the 2008 campaign, but many do
not anticipate taking action on issues
raised during the campaign after
the election is over. The survey did,
however, find that Americans
favor policy change to institutionalize
civic engagement, supporting
financing students' tuition in return for
service and expanding service
learning programs. Read More>>
Service-Learning Policies and
Practices: A Research-Based Advocacy
Paper
This paper builds upon existing NCLC
work, and provides a research-based
service-learning framework encompassing
the simultaneous renewal of
five critical components shown to
institutionalize and maximize
service-learning effectiveness: vision
and leadership, curriculum and
assessment, community-school
partnerships, professional development and
continuous improvement. This paper
translates service-learning's
research-based evidence for education
leaders and identifies best
practices and policies.
