Civic Mission of Schools

The Civic Mission of Schools was written to summarize evidence in favor of civic participation, as well as give examples of approaches to civic education.  The document provides a series of recommendations for educators, policymakers, funders, researchers, and others in regards to improving and encouraging civic education.

Education Commission of the States

The Education Commission of the States is a non-profit organization that facilitates the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences between educators and policymakers.  Their website contains many of their publications on citizenship education.  Most of these publications are in general terms, not just specific to the US.

National Center for Learning and Citizenship

A branch of the Education Commission of the States, the NCLC provides information on service learning and civic education through publications available on their website.  Though most of the publications are specific to the US, several contain information about civic education in general, and recommendations for its implementation.

IEA Civic Education Study

The IEA Civic Education Study is an international study on civic education, specifically civic knowledge and engagement.  The research tested and surveyed 90,000 14 year-old students from 28 countries and 50,000 17 to 19 year-old students from 16 countries in various aspects of civic knowledge such as democracy, national identity, social cohesion and diversity, and the engagement of youth in civil society.  Both studies, one for the 14 year-old students and one for the 17 to 19 year-old students, are available on their website.

Center for Civic Education

The Center for Civic Education is a non-profit group that administers a variety of curricular and teacher-training materials, as well as community based programs.  Their materials have been used in the US as well as other countries (for a list, see the bottom of the page at http://www.civiced.org/about.php).  The site includes descriptions of their materials and programs.  There are also articles and links to government sites.

Civic Education Project

The Civic Education Project is an international non-profit focused on civic education reform and support in new democracies.  Its focus has been the former communist world, but is now branching out.  The website illustrates is programs and support network.

CIVICUS

This international organization’s objective is to support and build capacity for citizen action around the world.  Their website has information on their organization, its members, and its programs.  It also contains articles, toolkits, and links related to civic interations.

Civnet

Civnet is a clearing house of civic education information and resources.  It is part of CIVITAS International.  The website contains online resources, articles, regional websites, and links to still more civic education resources.  The site is managed by the Center for Civic Education.

National Service Learning Clearing House

The Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse is a large collection of information on service learning (education through service) techniques and projects.  It also has a significant amount of information about civic education and participation.  This information comes in the form of articles, the NSLC library, program abstracts, and links to other service learning related sites.  To find civic education related materials use the search option on the home page.

Articles: These items can be research papers, fact sheets, or lists of links on a specific topic.  All are internet based.

NSLC Library: Most of these items are a part of the NSCL’s physical library and can only be borrowed by Learn and Serve America grantees and staff.  However, some entries are available on their own websites and can be viewed over the internet.

Project Abstracts: These are examples of various projects that are related to Learn and Serve America.  Most provide a few details on the nature of the project.  Most projects are more related to civic involvement and volunteerism, rather than civic education

Learning and Teaching Scotland

Sponsored by the Scottish Executive Education Department, Learning and Teaching Scotland reviews, assesses, and supports developments in education.  Their Education for Citizenship website details the civil education structure and curriculum in the Scottish education system.  Despite the focus on Scotland, the depth of information on the website could provide insight into how a civic education curriculum is organized and implemented.
