The Civic Mission of Schools was written to summarize evidence in favor of civic participation, as well as give examples of approaches to civic education. The document provides a series of recommendations for educators, policymakers, funders, researchers, and others in regards to improving and encouraging civic education.

The Education Commission of the
States is a non-profit organization that
facilitates the exchange of
information, ideas, and experiences between
educators and policymakers. Their website contains

IEA Civic Education
Study
The IEA Civic Education Study is an international study on civic education, specifically civic knowledge and engagement. The research tested and surveyed 90,000 14 year-old students from 28 countries and 50,000 17 to 19 year-old students from 16 countries in various aspects of civic knowledge such as democracy, national identity, social cohesion and diversity, and the engagement of youth in civil society. Both studies, one for the 14 year-old students and one for the 17 to 19 year-old students, are available on their website.

administers a variety of

The Civic Education Project is an
international non-profit
focused on civic education reform and support
in new democracies.
Its focus has been the former communist
world, but is now branching out. The

CIVICUS
This international organization’s
objective is to support and build capacity for
citizen action around the
world. Their
website has information on
their organization, its members, and its
programs. It also
contains articles, toolkits, and
links related to civic
interations.
Civnet
Civnet is a clearing house of civic
education information and resources. It
is part of CIVITAS International. The
website contains online resources, articles,
regional websites, and links to
still more civic education resources.
The site is managed by the Center for
Civic Education.

Service Learning Clearing
House
The Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse is a large collection of information on service learning (education through service) techniques and projects. It also has a significant amount of information about civic education and participation. This information comes in the form of articles, the NSLC library, program abstracts, and links to other service learning related sites. To find civic education related materials use the search option on the home page.
