Lamentations of Corps Members
Nigeria - Every year graduates of government-owned and approved private higher institutions in the country undergo compulsory national service. ICP Bids Farewell to Alex Etra
ICP is sorry to say good-bye to 2008 ICP Service Fellow Alex Etra. Alex was an invaluable contribution to the ICP staff, notable especially for being the driving force behind the creation of ICP's new website. He also contributed significantly to ICP's regional capacity building and youth service program mapping project, for which he has been the primary author of a report that ICP hopes to publish within the next few months. ICP hopes to see Alex around the office occasionally, though, as he has taken a position at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, just a few doors down from the ICP office. We wish him the best of luck!

  ICP Prepares for ServiceNation

By Natalya Twohill, ICP Intern

The journey towards a unified service movement and a new America begins September 11-13 when the ServiceNation Summit commences in New York City. The Summit will bring together leaders of all ages and every sector of American society to celebrate and enact a new era of power and potential for citizen service. The summit will also aim to lay out a new bold policy outline for addressing America’s greatest social challenges through expanded opportunities for volunteer and national service. We at ICP are happy to announce that as a proud member of the Organizing Committee for ServiceNation, we will be participating in the Summit next week. Our participation is in conjunction with our vision of a ‘world where young people in every nation are actively engaged in improving their lives and their communities through civic participation’. We at ICP look forward to our participation in the summit and will update this space and our blog on our experiences at ServiceNation. Stay tuned!

But beyond the athleticism, the Beijing Olympics has left behind a new and invigorated spirit of volunteerism in China. Read More>>

Educating Students to Foster Active Citizenship
Article in the American Association of Colleges and University's biannual journal, Peer Review. "Strengthening the preparation of active citizens is important first and foremost because the future health of our democracy depends upon it. All too often we take for granted the continuation of America's unique democratic system, and we do so at our peril. Colleges and universities have a large unmet responsibility in this regard."
