National Service and the Presumptive Republican and Democratic Nominees for President By Gabriel González-Kreisberg, ICP Intern
The US
Presidential
race is down to two major-party
candidates, John McCain of the Republican
Party
and Barack Obama of the Democratic
Party. McCain and Obama have both shown a
willingness to discuss the expansion of
AmeriCorps and new ideas for national and
community service in the US. Here at
ICP, we have paid close attention to their
platforms, as the future of National
Service both in the US and abroad is
contingent upon the policies of the two
candidates.
Both candidates have called for young men and women to serve their country in some capacity—in the armed forces, AmeriCorps, or the Peace Corps. Along with this call, the candidates have proposed implementing specific new program initiatives and policy changes in order to achieve the goal of increased civic engagement, though Obama’s platform is more comprehensive than McCain’s. Good-Bye to
Charmagne and Paula Charmagne was an invaluable member of the ICP team, bringing many new projects to fruition. Her professionalism, sincerity and leadership have had an impact on us all. She will be moving back to Minnesota, where she grew up, to serve as Program Director for the new Minnesota office of World Savvy, a global education non-profit. She is excited to be moving back home but sad to be leaving ICP and plans to continue to be involved in promoting youth civic engagement in her new position. Paula has made significant contributions to the advancement of the Talloires Network over the course of her fellowship, including the launch of the Talloires Network News. Her enthusiasm, intelligence and commitment, along with her humor and grace, will be sorely missed. She will be using her excellent writing skills to pursue a career path in journalism, where she will be writing on global health. Charmagne and Paula have been an extraordinary part of our team and we wish them both much happiness and success in their upcoming moves! |

Service For Peace – Model Elementary Schools Program
Adapted by
Katherine
Felt, ICP Intern, from
“Service For Peace
and the Model
School Program” by Gareth Davies,
Service For Peace
In the
village of Frasquito Gomez
in the
Dominican Republic, the elementary
school now boasts a safe, grass-covered
playground, freshly painted classrooms
with tiled floors, and flushing
toilets.
It is a haven for education and
literacy, allowing the community as a whole to
benefit from its recent improvements.
This was not always true – before the
volunteers from Service For Peace (SFP)
arrived, none of this was possible.
The
hard work of a group of high school and
college students from the US and the
Dominican Republic (DR) transformed this
elementary school, and in turn both
the community and the volunteers
themselves were
transformed. Read
