World Bank Meeting: Measuring the Impact of Youth Voluntary Service Programs

Innovations in Civic Participation and the World Bank recently partnered to host an international experts meeting on measuring the impact of youth voluntary service programs. The meeting, held on May 8-9, 2008 at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC, brought together over 50 researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from the fields of civic engagement, youth development, and impact evaluation to examine existing evidence on the impact of voluntary service on the program participants, explore different evaluation methods and challenges, identify gaps in the research, and develop a research agenda to address these gaps. AmeriCorps Act of 2008
USA - Senator Dodd (D-CT) announced legislation to update the AmeriCorps educational award, reestablish the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)'s ability to partner with governmental departments, and promote CNCS to a Cabinet-level position. Read More>>

vInvolved: England's Biggest Ever Youth Action Scheme 
England - v has backed vInvolved, a 3 year, £75 million scheme to encourage up to 500,000 young people across England to help out in and lead their own projects. 107 vinvolved teams, located in every region, will recruit youth volunteering ambassadors to encourage their peers to get involved. Over the coming months, 158 innovative projects across the country will be opening their doors to give enthusiastic young people the opportunity to get active on issues they’re passionate about. Young Volunteers in Quake Zone Ultimately Find a Modest Mission
China - The devastation in Sichuan province and surrounding areas has prompted an outpouring of goodwill from across China, resulting in $500 million in donations of cash and supplies and a mobilization of tens of thousands of volunteers. Read More>>

New Summer 2008 Interns
ICP is pleased to welcome three new interns for the Summer 2008 Research & Communications Internship.
  

Katherine Felt is a rising junior at Pennsylvania State University and a Schreyer Honors College Scholar. She is double majoring in International Relations and Russian and minoring in French and Francophone Studies. She recently served as a research assistant in the Political Science department at Penn State and has been active in the college chapter of Amnesty International and as an ESL Teaching Assistant
 
Alicia Lovett joins us from the University of San Diego, where she is a rising senior majoring in International Relations with a minor in Asian Studies. Alicia has an extensive background in volunteer work with children and young teenagers, and is interested in foreign education policy and program development, especially in underdeveloped countries.
 

Gabriel Gonzalez- Kreisberg is a rising senior at Wesleyan University, where he is majoring in Government with an emphasis on International Relations and Environmental Studies. Gabriel has volunteered extensively with youth, and interned at the Center for Community Change in Washington, D.C. last summer. He is interested in a future career in international politics and economics.

Featured Program: Ruwwad Youth Empowerment Project

The Ruwwad Youth Empowerment Project is a USAID-funded project in Palestine that aims to provide youth in the West Bank with meaningful opportunities to be involved in positive leadership activities that serve their communities, help them to be socially connected, and enhance their employability. The Talloires Network

The Talloires Network is a collective of individuals and institutions committed to promoting the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. The Talloires Network is currently developing a plan to enhance and expand partnerships with new and existing organizations.  The Network has been in conversations with CLAYSS (Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario) in Buenos Aires and the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at American University in Cairo to discuss the development of regional hubs for the Talloires Network.  We hope to expand this "network of networks" model over time.  To learn more about the latest Talloires Network news, check out our latest newsletter or visit our website.

Recently released by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) in conjunction with AmeriCorps Week, this report assesses the long-term impact of AmeriCorps service on alumni and discovers that AmeriCorps alumni have higher rates of civic engagment and overall life satisfaction than the population in general. Youth, Volunteering and Social Capital in Cambodia: Results of a Feasibility Study Conducted for a Cambodian Youth Service Program
This report from Youth Star Cambodia presents findings from a feasibility study designed to inform development of a initiative for youth volunteers. The study, conducted in late 2004, was designed to assess the environment for establishing such an initiative, and to examine traditional understandings and practices of volunteering, young people's perceptions of volunteering and service to others, the current challenges facing Cambodia, and the contribution that a youth volunteer service could make to development, poverty reduction, and building social capital. Baladna is a developmental and capacity building agency for Arab-Palestinian youth in Israel. Baladna works to address the gaps which exist between young Arab Palestinian citizens of Israel and other youth by fostering a strong sense of identity in order to spur community engagement and self-motivated social change.
