Conference Season: ICP Attends the IAVE World Volunteer and National Service Learning Conferences

ICP's Program Associate, Charmagne Campbell-Patton had a busy month of travel this April. She first flew to Panama City, Panama to attend the International Association for Volunteer Effort 20th World Volunteer Conference from April 2 - 6. Charmagne spent less than two days back home in Washington, D.C. before flying to Minneapolis, MN to join Susan Stroud, ICP Executive Director, at the National Youth Leadership Council's National Service-Learning Conference from April 8-13. Jamaica: Youth Minister Signs Youth Empowerment Agreement with Korea
Kingston - The Minister of Information, Culture, Youth, and Sports signed a co-operation agreement to allow Korea to undertake several projects in Jamaica that would assist the Youth Employment and Empowerment Training project. Read More>>
 


 
South Africa: Youth encouraged to take part in building projects
Vryburg -  Speaking during the launch of the National Youth Service (NYS) programme, Public Works Minister Thoko Didiza said more young people must participate in the projects to reduce the high rate of unemployment in the country.  The NYS seeks to create employment opportunities and eradicate poverty by involving young people in the delivery of crucial government services. World Bank International Experts Meeting
ICP and the Children & Youth Unit at the World Bank are partnering to convene an international experts meeting on measuring the impact of youth voluntary service programs this week at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC. The meeting will bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners from the field of youth civic engagement and particularly of youth service. A report from this meeting will be available in a few weeks. Email campbell-patton@icicp.org for more information.
 

 
Director of CLAYSS Visits ICP
ICP welcomed Maria Nieves Tapia Basilico, Director of Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario (CLAYSS) during her visit to Washington, D.C. earlier this month. Snra. Nieves spent a few days visiting the ICP office to talk with ICP and the Taillories Network about current and upcoming projects, winding up her visit as a guest speaker at a Brown Bag Lunch for the ICP staff.

Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC): The CCC Legacy in a Warming World

The 75th anniversary of the CCC is an occasion to celebrate the tradition of national service and reflect on its future. Whether in the infrastructure created or the example of service set, the CCC demonstrated the promise and potential that national service holds. It is this legacy that we honor and celebrate and it is this legacy that the current generation must now seek to emulate by making an equally ambitious commitment to service. That is why, on the 75th anniversary of the CCC, ICP and the Corps Network (among many others) are calling for a "Green New Deal"-with a Clean Energy Corps at its heart-that will honor the legacy of the original conservation corps and point the way forward for the next generation of Service and Conservation Corps members. Young People Around the World Celebrate Earth Day and Global Youth Service Day

Millions of young people across the world rallied in support of youth environmental and civic engagement in the last half of April to mark the 39th Earth Day on April 22nd, 2008, and the 20th Global Youth Service Day, April 25th, 2008. ICP applauds the Earth Day Network, Youth Service America, and the Global Youth Action Network for their success in coordinating this year's international turn-out. Read More>>
