Youth Service and Climate Change

To avoid the most devastating impacts of global warming, greenhouse gas emissions must start declining this decade, and by 2050 be 80 percent below their 1990 level.

Achieving this goal will require a vast citizen mobilization to shift our economies and our lifestyles towards greater sustainability.

Through this initiative, ICP is working to:

  1. Gather information about existing scalable models that apply youth service as a strategy to reducing greenhouse gas emissions either directly or through educational activities, and;
  2. Incubate promising approaches that apply national service or service-learning to combating global warming.

Working for a Clean Energy Corps

ICP is working with a broad coalition of partners to develop a Green Jobs and Service Clearinghouse that will advance the concept of a Clean Energy Corps  and expand "green jobs" and "green service" opportunities. A national "Green Jobs and Service Corps" would mobilize millions of Americans to meet the dual challenges of global climate change and poverty reduction by:

  • Helping the United States transition to a clean energy economy;
  • Providing low-income youth with pathways out of poverty through skills training and service;
  • Offering citizens of all ages and backgrounds a means to take concrete action on climate change, and;
  • Uniting the country in a rapid, massive volunteer mobilization to reduce global warming.
As part of this initiative, ICP will conduct research on policies and programs around the world that are using youth service as a strategy to address global climate change. We will also be working with our partners to advance policies that address climate change by "greening" the economy.

ICP's Going Green Global Initiative

ICP is conducting research on policies and programs around the world that are using youth service as a strategy to address global climate change. A new emphasis on green service opportunities will also be incorporated into our regional programs, policy scans and the database.
