9th Global Conference

International Association
for National Youth Service

Hosted by:

The International Association for National Youth Service (IANYS) is pleased to announce that the 9th Global Conference on National Youth Service will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrinain Alexandria, Egypt from October 25-27, 2010.The IANYS conference will be organized in partnership with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy & Civic Engagement at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP), the IANYS permanent Secretariat.

The Global Conference provides a unique opportunity for professionals in the youth civic engagement field to learn from colleagues about experiences, resources, and innovative practices that welcome young people as engaged participants in society and teach essential skills for future workplace and community success. Given the dearth of international institutions and conventions in the field of youth civic engagement, the IANYS Conference is an unparalleled opportunity to take a global pulse on issues critical to building stable, prosperous societies and advance youth civic engagement as a strategy. Participants will include professionals in the field of youth civic engagement from across the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region and from around the world, along with youth participants from high quality and diverse service programs who will contribute to and be integrated into the conference in substantive ways.

The Global Conference will take place over the course of three days and will include a special multi-session track on the connection between youth service and employability; a track for policymakers and others interested in National Youth Service policy development; and sessions to explore other theoretical and practical themes of service, such as peace building and post-conflict reconstruction, service and technology, impact evaluation, private sector funding for youth service, and more.

The location for the IANYS 9th Global Conference will be at the renewed Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a state of the art establishment in Alexandria, Egypt with a library that holds millions of books, four museums, four art galleries, a planetarium, nine permanent exhibitions, eight academic research centers, and more! The Library of Alexandria's prominence and its mission to be "a center of excellence for the production and dissemination of knowledge and a place of dialogue and understanding between cultures and peoples" makes it the perfect location to raise the profile of youth service and facilitate dialogue and the exchange of ideas and practices among stakeholders from all attending countries. The city of Alexandria, known as "the Pearl of the Mediterranean", is equally captivating, with its abundant historical landmarks, multi-periodic architecture, limitless antiquities, and stunning Mediterranean Sea coastline.

Engaging with IANYS

Civic engagement is becoming more widely acknowledged as an integral strategy for youth development and meeting critical local and national needs, and ICP realizes how important it is to keep the surging momentum for service going strong.  We can do this not only by continuing efforts to promote and create youth civic engagement programs and policy, but also by participating in IANYS, the only global youth service network of its kind, in order to further the sharing of models, ideas and good practice.

This is why we would like you to get involved!  For starters, we ask that past participants of the IANYS Global Conference share their experiences with us on our Ning Discussion Forum located here and that those interested in attending this year let us know what insights you look forward to gaining at the Conference.

Our hope is that this new interactive space for the promotion of the IANYS 9th Global Conference will also serve as a learning community and networking medium, so that all of our members may learn about and engage in the important work that IANYS and all of you are involved in worldwide.
